Habitat: Barnhardt Trail

#1

Post by Gee.S »

Not our first rodeo at Barnhardt, but another glorious hike along one of the most famous hiking trails in all of Arizona. This spectacular trail takes you roughly 5 miles and 2000' elevation gain to the very top of the Mazatzal Wilderness, where it meets other trails in a remote and rustic area in which you could lose yourself for weeks, possibly months. Most of the trail is atop some fairly tall canyon walls that follow a major runoff area. Along the trail A. chrysantha, A. toumeyana, Echinocereus santaritensis, and Dudleya saxosa are found in enormous numbers.

One of my favorite trails! I've been trying to id the plant in your photo "Barnhardt 213.JPG" from a hike I took on the trail almost 2 years ago, but I had no flowers to go with it. Now seeing the flowers, I've come to the conclusion that it is Western Waterleaf, Hydrophyllum occidentale. Thanks!

I don't think it was flowering on our way up, but we saw a few later, on our way down. What an eye-catcher!
