Uncarina grandidieri.
Starting it's third summer. It was a 2" potted plant when I bought around this time of year then. By late July or August it bloomed..and well. Last year? Not one bloom. This year I was expecting a no bloom summer because of the winter rains, and then it flowered. Its tender. Its been nipped by frost. In late fall/early winter the leafs didn't just fall off...they sort of melted and became kind of mangy looking..then fell.
All back to normal. I wouldn't doubt it would grow in ground. I like it as a potted plant. All those curves (never pruned) show better in a pot.

Re: Uncarina grandidieri.
A photo on a cloudy day. This is rapidly become one of my favorite plants period.
I had to tie it to a stake as it was leaning over a pathway. The whole underside glowed silvery. Its going to really hurt if this plant is ever killed by frost. Its got a nice fat base (in a 3 gallon pot too) to go with that top exuberance.

This is my Uncarina hybrid which I have had for years. I keep it in a pot, and spends its time indoors in the winter. Jkw

Very nice JK. Look at all the blooms too. Have you tried rooting cuttings or seeds? I still have not pruned it- so no cuttings. This year I would like to try seeds. Pods are green right now.

Thanks! Seeds are your best options. I have tried them, and have been successful. I have tried a few cuttings, but they did not work. I believe in our climate it would be very difficult. It would be fine in the tropics. JkwStan wrote:Very nice JK. Look at all the blooms too. Have you tried rooting cuttings or seeds? I still have not pruned it- so no cuttings. Ah,that's a beauty Winston. Your getting good growth out of a greenhouse that far north. Especially for plants that like hot climates.
I'm about ready to pot up my plant. It looks like its ready to go dormant in the not too distant future. Maybe I can put that off with a quick pot up. Its bloomed all summer. Its kills me that I have no spot in the ground where it gets all day sun or near that. Small yard surrounding tallish house-too much shade.

Beautiful plants guys! I just started with uncarina grandidieri a year ago. I’ve gotten significant growth in the past year. But, no flowers. Does it take a certain amount of years before they begin to flower? Mine is started from seed.

Not really. I would say a couple years would be enough, and the blooms will come during the end of in spring towards summer. Jkw

Not really. It could have grown so fast,it abandoned flowering common for many plants to do that. But,you should get loads of blooms this year..full Chicago summer sun.

Re: Uncarina grandidieri.
It went dormant in November when nights fell to the 40's. Its now near April and as dormant as can be. 5 months.
