Wonderful plants leo.

What are they growing in? Looks like pure peat or coir but I'm sure it isn't!

You are right, is not pure peat but mainly is blonde peat, every people think it is the Antichrist for the succulents but I grow Aloes, Haworthias, Agaves, Echeverias in the same mix, I have thousands of plants and they grow fine, of course you have to control the water and it depend of your weather too, our zone is very very dry.

I believe blonde peat is the topmost layer. Don't think I'd get away with it in the UK....

Aloe marlothii variegated sounds nice. I wonder if it would burn in hot dry summer days? The foliage on A.marlothii really can change look in different amounts of light. Pale green in half days sun to colorful reds oranges and hints of purple in hot full sun.
Hayward Ca. 75-80f summers,60f winters.
