Forest Service says media needs photography permit in wilderness areas, alarming First Amendment advocates
The U.S. Forest Service has tightened restrictions on media coverage in vast swaths of the country's wild lands, requiring reporters to pay for a permit and get permission before shooting a photo or video in federally designated wilderness areas.

Under rules being finalized in November, a reporter who met a biologist, wildlife advocate or whistleblower alleging neglect in 36 million acres of wilderness would first need special approval to shoot photos or videos even on an iPhone.

Permits cost up to $1,500, says Forest Service spokesman Larry Chambers, and reporters who don't get a permit could face fines up to $1,000.

It seems the way that report is written, the only logical conclusion is that the Fed does not want alleged neglect in Federal wilderness areas to be reported by the media. Although it says permits can be obtained for $1500 (the fine is cheaper? lol), it also states permission must be obtained, inferring that said permission need not be granted.
Makes me wonder just what they're trying to hide?
BTW. I don't see any mention prohibiting a member of the public from taking photos, just members of the media. Strange indeed.

I believe the issue involves some manner of commercial gain. Whatever, it's absolutely ludicrous. First time someone chooses to contest that fine and involves the ACLU, I suspect some changes may result. We're out there all the time, SLR in hand. We're supposed to worry about where we direct our lens in regard to wilderness areas?

Try to photograph Apokanyewest at your own (and your Canon's) peril. The government is just trying to keep the peace. You shouldn't be so skittlish.
