Palms of Lago Vista
Specifically my palms in Lago Vista, Texas.I figure the beginning is as good a time to document growth rate, hardiness, etc. Sorry these pictures were at dusk, lowering resolution.

Re: Palms of Lago Vista
As it turns out, the above palm was misidentified and not a Trachycarpus. Other specimen have been found producing offsets. Upon closer inspection it appears to be a Brahea, most likely the silver variant of dulcis

Re: Palms of Lago Vista
Wow! that's a who's who of hardy palms. Going to be a lot of shade in those beds soon.
I just up trimmed a big volunteer S. palmetto that I realized was keeping the agave beds shaded in winter. That low angle sun fools me when I'm normally only observing in the long day months. Am hoping the protection afforded by the overstory on cold nights doesn't affect the daily warmth I hope to improve. 16 f here this morning but of course officially 20 in town.

Re: Palms of Lago Vista
Sounds like you are having an early start to winter. I’m hoping atleast this winter will be mild and give everything a chance to establish. I’m prepared if not .abborean wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2024 6:15 am Wow! that's a who's who of hardy palms. Going to be a lot of shade in those beds soon.

Re: Palms of Lago Vista
All looking pretty good after a low of 23°F for a couple nights. The only disappointment is the Acrocomia totai that had 50% burn despite a plastic container over top

Re: Palms of Lago Vista
It turned out those were not princeps but in fact Brahea dulcis. Which made sense because the grower(Pat McNeal) advertised and sold that species years ago, but towards the end of his life suffered signs of dementia. Regarding the plant next to it, that is a Macrozamia johnsonii. They actually survived 2021 locally, so like moorei, quite caudex hardy.

Re: Palms of Lago Vista
My Brahea is now looking like a real palm. Blue too. A bit crowded..so is everything when you live 56 years in the same home. Also the city took more of miniscule front yard to enlarge the sidewalks for modern standards. I lost my PC and will be getting one soon..then download the old software that might be hard to find so I don't need a new camera too. Loads of pictures too.

Re: Palms of Lago Vista
The trunks of Brahea armata are nothing to look at. It might be good landscaping to grow showy bushy plants under it. When it gets larger a Bougainvillea in full bracts would look outstanding.

Re: Palms of Lago Vista
I like seeing how people mix palms with agaves and stuff, especially with the blue green fan palms it makes a for a tropical deserty look. I myself started with palms and got into agaves later seeing that they made cool companion plants. Very nice collection you have, keep posting about it.
