That can happen, I had another internet friend tell me she had one here in the bay area by a window indoors that grew long vines and then one day,it collapsed and the whole plant died.
Plants die..part of the hobby. They die in botanical gardens and their greenhouses too. Some things are touchy forever.

The lower 1/4 of the vine is still healthy. Yeah, not a big deal, but only thing worth mentioning about it.

Hey, I know this thread is somewhat old, but I wanted to share my dioscorea mexicana that I have outdoors in summer here in North Texas.

I got this dude for a steal for the size it is, paid $75 for a 2 gallon sized plant. Of course I was told after that it was likely poached which I am very much against, so I had mixed feelings on this plant when it arrived. I ended up leaving it bare root indoors on my desk shelf for 8 months, unsure whether to pot it. It vined on my desk a TON, just chilling bare root, it was wild. Well, my husband felt sorry for it, so he plopped it in one of my dirt bins (clear storage tote that I keep my gritty mix in) and put the lid back on, leaving the container on the floor of my plant office with all the winter grow lights about 3 feet above it. 4 months later as I was moving my aloes outdoors I found it in the bin, with a whole ass root system fully developed and I was SHOCKED. I potted it up in a 2 gallon of my gritty mix and placed him on my patio table which gets full sun all day filtered through my twinwall covered pergola. I water every few days, the thing is a MONSTER and is very happy. I had to make a trellis for it because it kept trying to hang onto my aloe bloom stalks.

And that is the story of how I accidentally have a thriving dioscorea mexicana.

The rooted cutting is doing great. So, its a wash..or even I'm still ahead. $15 for a healthy lush vine. The turtleback will be one day.
