Gymnocalycium: A collector’s guide vs Gymnocalycium recounted

Anyone own both from John Pilbeam? One is no longer published but can be purchased used at a premium, the other is available new at a much lower price point. Is his follow up book that? Additional information that adds onto the original? Or the second book more of a condensed updated second edition? Making the original unnecessary? Thanks

I do not have the second one, but I have a PDF of the first one you mention if you are interested.

I have another Gymno book by Putnam also in PDF.

Thanks. I had found that PDF of “The Collectors Guide” on Opuntiads.com , and now the one from Putnam thanks to you. I’ll probably buy the second from Pilbeam and compare to the PDF. I’m trying to find very specific locality and elevation info. Going on common internet info you would think the only hardy Gymnocalycium is bruchii, with baldianum being moderately hardy. I’ve found hardiness lists from CSS in New Mexico, St. Louis, and elsewhere suggesting there are several that will survive singles digits or lower.

Would like to see the results of your cold hardiness research.

Although I don't agree with all of his nomenclature, I find that Gymnocalycium
in Habitat and Culture
by Graham Charles to be superior to Pilbeam's original book on the genus. I haven't seen his newer book Gymnocalycium – Recounted yet.

Gymnocalycium andreae, G. baldianum, G. bruchii, G. calochlorum, G. gibbosum are listed as hardy in St. Louis(zone 6B) by the Henry Shaw C&SS.

gibbosum has been a stand out this summer. Full sun and 100+F all summer and they just put on growth and an aggressive look. The greener Gymnocalycium all required some shade.

For aficionados, "Gymnocalycium: A Collector's Guide" provides in-depth information with an emphasis on species variety and cultivation. On the other hand, "Gymnocalycium Recounted" offers a more narrative perspective on these fascinating cacti by diving into individual experiences and tales. They each serve distinct niches within the hobbyist community.Fm Whatsapp
