Wanted: Large blue webber agave

Hi all!

I am trying to locate a very large blue webber agave for an event in the UK (london)

Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction?

Hi. I'm near London, one of the few Brits on this site , and also with a lot of contacts in the nursery trade.

I think you will be very lucky indeed to find a very large Agave weberi available. It isn't commonly grown over here - the overwhelming majority of agave growers in this country focus on small growing plants that can be kept in greenhouses. Agave weberi gets big so just isn't grown. There are small handful of people like me who try growing these outdoors but you could probably count them on the fingers of one hand. It isn't in the usual loop of commercial growers from Italy/Spain where most nurseries import their stock from. 'Possibly' you might strike lucky at one of the larger wholesalers from Holland such as Waterdrinker or UBINK but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Does it have to be Agave weberi? Seems fairly specific.

In other words - Agave tequiliana? That's going to be a tough one. Not an easy one to handle. In visualizing trying to pack a big one up for shipping, I think actually it would be more fun and less hazardous to play with a crocodile. I can't count the number of times my large potted specimen has ripped my arms when trying to clean out leaves/debris from between the leaves. Also, it's not a plant that tolerates freezing weather - definitely needs to be kept above 32 F (0 C).

Hmm, could be tequilana as well as weberi. Hadn't thought of that. No more chance of finding that over here, either.

No,no he wants the Agave weberi and blue or variegated and that's rated to z8b in some websites,including Palmbobs DG. Its a huge Agave,5' tall and 8' in diameter. heck if you find the variegated or medio picta form,let me know..lol,beautiful plant for a giant pot or...lots of room in ground.

Hell, I have a bunch of variegated A. weberi, and particularly attractive ones at that. Non-variegates can reach 12' across. Variegates perhaps half as large.

Quite coincidentally, I had a very short "discussion" today with a know-it-all "expert" visitor who wanted to tell me all about how the Blue Weber Agave is the one they make tequila from and on and on until I quit trying to explain that there is an Agave weberi and an Agave tequiliana Weber and they are not the same. I gave him a chance to shut up and listen instead of being a know-nothing expert and I finally just left him standing there to talk to himself. In my old age, I'm becoming a lot less tolerant with self proclaimed experts who don't know what they are talking about, especially for some odd reason the last couple of years in particular. It seems to be the new big thing to be a know-nothing expert (stable genius* I've also heard it called). The sadness of it all is it seems to be a contagion, and you don't even have to have physical contact - visual contact via TV apparently can also cause the spreading of this affliction.

This is why I asked because apparently Blue Weber Agave is the name that seems to have caught on now for what us somewhat more experienced folks have called Agave tequiliana Weber for a lot longer.

* A Stable Genius is the fellow who works in the barn-like structure and is an absolute expert when it comes to shoveling horse manure - hence the reference to the stable. Hand him the big shovel and get out of the way.

I have A.tequilana 'WEBER'S BLUE' But I figured if he meant Tequila that would have been said in his post. Plus,the extra hardiness of Agave weberi he might have seen in plants in ground in the UK. Agave tequilana is strictly greenhouse where it goes to 32f..at 30f they burn a lot. For me not a larger Agave and it did pup like 3 years ago,I removed the pups and it hasn't pupped since. 78f summers do things to tropical plants not like in the tropics.
Like Mean says..different drinks are made from the two plant sound alike names. Probably a few more too...just not popular.

I have a nice Continental form specimen weberi, but it is rooted to the ground. I also have some small azul Blue. Have a look. Jkw

I doubt it. I have a few Young Webber 'Azul blue', but they are under 2 feet. I just thought of moving the goal post a bit. Jkw
