Agave ‘Blue Glow’ with pups
What is the deal here! I believe there are 6 plants total. I thought it was done throwing pups, but I rotated the pot and discovered another small one had burst out. I have had ‘Blue Glow’ Agaves for years and my understanding is that they are solitary. So what gives? It’s a beautiful plant for sure, I’m undecided about what I’m going to do with it as far as keep it, sell it for the right price, or separate the pups. This one is a head scratcher to me. I posted pics before when I bought it as Agave ‘Red Martin’ which is completely made up. So what is the deal?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I think this pupping characteristic if because of tissue culture. Have had a couple of species that supposedly don't pup such as maximilliana and can't think of another cause. Ovatifolia also occasionally does this. Am making an assumption here...

Agree. I've seen this recently on 'Frostbite' as well as A. impressa and a few other supposedly solitary offerings. I wonder if anyone has ever explored deliberately inducing this as an alternative to coring one of their prized but solitary possessions?abborean wrote:I think this pupping characteristic if because of tissue culture. I have had 'Blue Glow' make offsets in the past it's nothing out of the ordinary. There are a lot of solitary agaves which will pup with pot culture. Letting them get rootbound seems to be the trigger.

Re: Agave ‘Blue Glow’ with pups
I agree that is also a way of inducing pupping in typically solitary agave species. I had a tiny TC maximilliana from Shady Oaks that immediately produced numerous pups in an oversized pot though. In a little over a year I had 20 or so of them. Had a similar experience with zebra from the same source but planted in the ground. I don't know if Greg's plants are TC but one of two ovatifolia I purchased from him pupped. In retrospect I guess the latter occurrence could've been some ungerminated seeds coming on? These pups didn't make it through last winter.KLC wrote:I have had 'Blue Glow' make offsets in the past it's nothing out of the ordinary. I have a bunch of ovatifolia from seed that are making pups, I usually pull them out of the pots, I'm not so sure they would grow into anything in a reasonable amount of time.
