Anyone growing Yucca Mixtecana?

#1

Post by Meangreen94z »

A less common Yucca, seeds have been available for a while although my germination rate up until this last batch was 0%. I finally have a few coming up, hopefully the seller was honest on what they are. Hardiness seems to be an unknown, I had someone tell me frost tender but other sources suggest much hardier. This Spanish website says Zone 7(-17.7*C or 0*F).

I am growing it here but it is still early days - it has been through 3 winters and the lowest temp was around -3C.

Given it's provenance I wouldn't expect it to be massively hardy.

Thanks. Did it show any burn at -3*C? I hopefully will have enough extras that they can end up along the coast and in far South Texas as well.

It was fine at -3C

Incidentally, that first pic is one I took - I had a look just now to double check, but it is defo one of mine. Funny how they appear all over the internet! I have stopped asking nurseries to remove my pictures whenever I see them now - it just happens so often.

Thanks, sorry I realized that after posting and then reviewing the gallery. I knew I had seen a higher quality version somewhere. It seems most of what is known and a lot of seeds came from your trip down there. I had bought seed from RPS and Mesa Garden, both probably from your trip, and neither germinated after repeated attempts. I found a seller in England, and 6 of the 10 have germinated so far. Hopefully they are what he claims. I noticed RPS updated the listing in the past month with a “new” logo, so maybe a new source has come forward.

I actually went back and ordered more. Depending on the amount that survive and the accuracy of the seed I plan on sending out a few across the country. I have extra seed of other stuff for now. I have a friend in Germany, a friend locally, and Bananaguy that I need to mail out to in the next month or so.

Yes, some of them are so gaunt and sparsely branched that they are reminiscent of Aloidendron pillansii. A plant of the Tehuacan valley, which is one of the finest habitats for cacti and succulent plants on the planet.
