Yucca 'Eclipse'

Post by Melt in the Sun »

I saw this rather attractive yucca at big box yesterday. It looks rather tropical - anyone seen it or have experience growing it? It is quite a bit larger than the typical Y. elephantipes sold as "gloriosa" around here, though it did have a similar feel to the leaves and the spines were similarly soft.

From what I just read some are claiming it’s just a variegated Yucca gigantea ?

Y. gigantea = Y. elephantipes, no? It's certainly bigger and floppier than what is usually available.

Ostensibly, yes. Also = guatemalensis, too. The whole group is a mess and needs sorting out IMO as there look to be many different looking plants going by this name. Been discussed on here a few times if you search.

No excuse for calling it gloriosa, though - that is just plain sloppy.

This yucca has reached a big box store in Chicago. Examining the leaves in person, it seems to be a larger, variegated version of Yucca elephantipes. The leaves are larger and floppier, but still soft and safe to touch.

It is labelled from Altman Plants, but their website currently has no content about it.
