Cheap Walmart cacti

#1

Post by abborean »

Am more of an agave lover but can't resist a good deal on cacti even if they aren't hardy in the open at my place. Costa Farms cacti and succulents are showing up at our local Walmarts for 8 bucks a piece. The variety of Astrophytum cultivars is nothing short of amazing. I've had some success with Astrophytum planted in holes drilled in rocks outside on the south side of the house. These would have glass tipped over them in winter. Here's a pic of a 24 dollar weak moment at Walmart last week:

I hear ya, that would be hard to pass up.
Agave
"American aloe plant," 1797, from Greek Agaue, proper name in mythology (mother of Pentheus), from agauos "noble," perhaps from agasthai "wonder at".

The Astrophytum asterias might make it outside but the Myrtillocactus geometrizans and Euphorbia obesa I wouldn’t leave out below 30°F. Astrophytum ornatum is hardy into the teens usually and I’ve had luck with myriostigma as well.

Yes. I only have experience with Astrophyton outside. I don't really know what the temp is under the glass on the south side but the Madagascan weed kalanchoe thrive there only getting ugly but not dead in the worst winters. The broad leaved ones will die.

abborean, M.geometrizans cv. Fukurokuryuzinboku has survived around 28*F in open with ease in my area but E. obesa may not survive these temperatures. What is the lowest you get in your area?
BTW, I am not sure but is it an obesa hybrid?

normal low is in the teens f for short periods but we are in an extreme weather event right now. It was 7f this morning! Official low was almost 10f higher though. Under the glass on the south side of the house a few xeric tropicals are hardy. Mostly the madascan weedy kalanchoes.

I remembered incorrectly , Astrophytum capricorne has been very hardy the last 2 winters, along with ornatum. These may in fact be hardier.
